Architectural Photography Project Review: Iowa State University VDL

Iowa State University VDL Expansion

Veterinary diagnostic laboratories play a vital role in enhancing the educational experience of students pursuing careers in veterinary medicine, providing them with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary for success in the field, especially valuable here in the midwest where agriculture reigns high in the regional economy. A national leader in protecting animal and human health, the full-service laboratories at Iowa State University’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory process upwards of 120,000 cases each year and conduct more than 1.5 million tests annually. The need for expanded services was growing, and Iowa State University chose to work with Strang to design the new facility.

With changing process flows and a massive increase in volume, Strang worked with ISU to create a new one-of-a-kind VDL to meet their growing demand. Previously located in the ISU veterinarian school, moving the VDL to its own building freed up space in the vet school for surgery suites, hospital improvements, and classrooms. Deciding on a new facility, ISU sought to improve both capacity and efficiency of the VDL’s processes and services.

Architectural Photography at ISU VDL

Crimson Sun Studios was hired by Strang to photograph the recently completed project. The Weitz Company and Baker Group joined the shoot to cost-share and gain usage of the professional imagery. With a mixture of educational spaces, offices, conference rooms, MEP systems, and laboratory space, ISU’s VDL offered a diverse selection for photography. The facility was on the precipice of students starting classes and we would not be permitted to photograph after that point, so we had a tight timeline for production and limited numbers of folks to include in our imagery. With the help of a few students and the production crew standing in, we were able show the function and scale of each space and how Strang’s design intent helped create an optimal educational VDL facility. Below we share the gallery of images created, take a look!

We captured image frames of these glass partition conference doors opening and closing to animate into a gif to show the function and adaptability of the space. You may notice some color banding across the animated gif. This is due to the compression needed to keep file sizes small enough for web use.
