Designing For A Mission | Transplant Donor Recognition at UW Health

The UW Health Transplant Center in Madison, Wisconsin, has a long history of providing life-saving transplant services to patients in the region and beyond. The program began in the early 1960s when Dr. Folkert Belzer and Dr. James Hardy developed a new technique for preserving organs for transplantation, known as the Belzer UW solution. This breakthrough in organ preservation paved the way for successful kidney transplants, and the UW-Madison transplant program was officially established in 1966.

In the early years, the center focused primarily on kidney transplants, but soon expanded to include liver, pancreas, heart, and lung transplants. The center was one of the first in the country to perform successful liver and pancreas transplants. Over the years, the UW Health Transplant Center has expanded its services to include heart, lung, and bone marrow transplants, as well as kidney and liver transplants. The center is known for its exceptional outcomes and high success rates, with many patients traveling from around the world to receive care.

Today, the UW Health Transplant Center is one of the largest and most respected transplant programs in the country, with a team of highly skilled physicians, surgeons, and support staff who are dedicated to providing the best possible care to their patients. The center has performed thousands of transplants over the years, and its patients have achieved excellent outcomes, with high rates of success and long-term survival.

It was this mission that ZEBRADOG, a Madison-based creative agency specializing in dynamic environmental design, worked to bring to life through thoughtful, interactive means. It was understood that the mission of breakthrough organ transplantation was only possible due to the incredible, selfless people who chose to donate organs. Of course, a majority of organs come from cadaveric donors, those who have passed and chose to donate upon their passing. Living organ donation is a relatively rare occurrence, and it is typically limited to specific organs, such as a kidney or a portion of the liver. Living donation is only possible if the donor is in good health and meets strict medical criteria, and it is always voluntary. It is these amazing humans who are honored in this new Donor Recognition Wall now on-display at the UW Health Transplant Center. With beautiful, colorful, backlit disks showing the names of donors and an interactive digital display showing details of each donor accessible through a simple QR code and search feature, the Donor Recognition Wall shares and celebrates the incredible people who made gifts of organ donation.

In addition to donor recognition, ZEBRADOG designed and facilitated a Courtesy Core Display at the entrance of the Transplant Center, helping visitors understand and navigate the center and ensure an exceptional visitor experience to a facility with an exceptional reputation for care in the US and around the world.

You’ve now seen the architectural photography Crimson Sun Studios created for ZEBRADOG to share this design success with the world. The primary goal of this space is to engage visitors both in their arrival and navigation of the center, and with the selfless donors who have helped save countless lives through the years. We show use and function of the design by having people interact with ZEBRADOG’s unique design elements. This shines even deeper in the video below, where the addition of time and motion is added to visual elements in bringing the story of function and accessibility to the viewer.
